What is Gestalt Therapy?

July 04, 20244 min read

Gestalt Therapy is a powerful modality that is rooted in the belief that individuals are best understood within the context of their current environment and relationships. It truly is a holistic modality, by focusing on the present moment and encouraging self-awareness.

Gestalt means "whole" or "pattern"

It looks to see you as a whole person, experiencing a whole environment, responding within the context of your whole world.

This particular therapy's emphasis is on viewing the individual as a whole rather than as a sum of separate parts. It considers your thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and experiences as interconnected, and it seeks to integrate these aspects into a cohesive self-awareness.

One of the core principles of Gestalt therapy is the idea of "here and now." Unlike traditional talk therapies that delve into past experiences, Gestalt therapy homes in on the present moment. This focus on the present helps you become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, and actions as they occur, enabling you to gain insights into how you interact with the world and how you might make changes to improve your well-being.

Core Principles

  • Awareness

Awareness is the cornerstone of Gestalt therapy. By becoming more attuned to your present experiences, you can identify patterns and behaviours that may be hindering your growth. This heightened awareness allows you to make conscious choices and take responsibility for your actions.

  • Figure-Ground

In every moment, some aspects of our experience stand out to us while others fade into the background. For example, when you look at a beautiful painting, certain details catch your eye while the rest becomes less noticeable. Gestalt therapy helps you shift your focus to notice different parts of your experience that you might usually overlook. This can provide new insights and a deeper understanding of yourself.

  • Unfinished Business

Unresolved issues from the past can manifest as emotional blockages in the present. Gestalt therapy helps you identify and address these "unfinished business" and how they're impacting your current reality, allowing you to release emotional baggage and move forward with greater clarity and freedom.

  • Communication and Boundaries

Healthy relationships require clear boundaries and effective communication with others. Gestalt therapy explores how you interact with others and helps you establish healthy boundaries, improving your relationships and overall well-being.

Techniques Used in Gestalt Therapy

Gestalt therapy utilises a variety of techniques to facilitate self-awareness and personal growth. I love that this modality can be incorporated into our sessions in the counselling room, as well as integrated into your everyday life for in-real-time shifts and growth. Some of these techniques include:

Experiential Exercises: These exercises encourage you to explore your feelings and behaviours in the present moment. Examples include role-playing, guided imagery, and creative expression through art or movement.

The Empty Chair Technique: This powerful technique involves speaking to an empty chair as if it represents a person or a part of yourself. This can help you process unresolved emotions and gain new perspectives on your experiences. By incorporating role reversal, this technique can evoke a much deeper understanding. (This one's my favourite!)

Dialogue: Using dialogue can help you become more aware of your inner experiences. This can involve dialogues between different parts of yourself, such as your critical inner voice and your compassionate self.

Body Awareness: Gestalt therapy encourages you to pay attention to physical sensations and body language as they can provide valuable insights into your emotional state. This also leads really well into somatic therapy, if that is part of your healing journey.

Benefits

As a holistic counsellor, I integrate Gestalt therapy into my practice because it aligns with my mission to guide you to your own intuition and, through greater self-awareness, create a wildly true-to-you life. The reasons I love this modality are many, but here's just a few:

  • Empowerment: Gestalt therapy empowers you to take an active role in your healing process. By increasing your self-awareness, you gain the tools to make positive changes in your life.

  • Present-Centered: If you often find yourself dwelling on the past or worrying about the future, Gestalt therapy can help you anchor yourself in the present moment, leading to a greater sense of peace and fulfillment.

  • Holistic Approach: Gestalt therapy considers all aspects of your being – mind, body, and spirit. This holistic approach can lead to a deeper understanding of yourself and more comprehensive healing.

  • Improved Relationships: By exploring your patterns of interaction and establishing healthy boundaries, Gestalt therapy can enhance your relationships and improve your ability to connect with others.

Gestalt therapy is a dynamic and transformative approach that can help you navigate life's challenges with grace and authenticity. By focusing on the present moment and developing self-awareness, this modality empowers you to create a life that is true to yourself. If you are experiencing a life transition and seeking a holistic approach to healing, Gestalt therapy may offer the insights and tools you need to move forward with courage and integrity.

As a holistic counsellor, I am here to support you on your journey towards greater self-awareness and well-being. If you are curious about how Gestalt therapy can benefit you, please feel free to reach out and schedule a consultation. Together, we can explore your unique path to healing and growth.
